WHAT IS IT?

Run Jump Throw (RJT), the Athletics Canada grassroots development program for our sport, is designed to introduce children ages 7-12 to the FUNdamentals of running, jumping, and throwing skills using age appropriate sequential progressions.  RJT utilizes Sport Canada's Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) pathway of athletics and teaches the technical skill progressions for boys and girls. RJT builds physical literacy transferable to other sports and activities, and promotes a fun, safe, and active learning environment for children.  Each RJT lesson is generally 30-45 minutes for an average class size and uses the RJT Equipment bag provided.  RJT also includes progressions for older athletes, and can be adapted for children with special needs.  Two clinicians are recommended to conduct a successful RJT clinic.

WHY IS THIS VALUABLE IN SASKATCHEWAN?

The RJT Program was developed in response to the staggering obesity rates that have been reported in our province and country. The development of fundamental movement skills (i.e.; physical literacy) may enable healthier, stronger, and more active children. The RJT program compliments our Province's school curriculum. We believe RJT provides both awareness of the sport of Athletics and promotes positive experiences with movement.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

During RJT program delivery, children are engaged in active learning, led by trained Run, Jump, Throw instructors. Sask Athletics offers various opportunities to access the RJT program in your Club, School or Community. See below for more information on these opportunities:

COMMENTS FROM PAST TEACHERS AND STUDENTS:

- “My class really enjoyed all the activities the instructors presented. They always looked forward to it. I think this type of activity encourages kids to try new things they may not be aware of. It gives them a different perspective on how we move to do things. I only hope it continues and is encouraged in the physical education curriculum.”

- “My students looked forward to Run, Jump, Throw every week. They felt successful in the program and had a connection with the instructors. Thank you for including us and giving us this opportunity. The kids loved it and experienced success with it."

- "The lead-up skills are presented in a way that all students can be successful."

- "The instructors were well prepared, highly motivated, excellent with the students and modelled and taught technical skills very well. Two thumbs up from the grade 3/4 class. My students enjoyed the program greatly."
